How to Turn the System Restore 
OFF and ON in Windows XP 
To clear out the System Restore area you basically need to turn it
OFF, and then restart the computer. 

While the System Restore is is OFF, you should take the opportunity
to perform all your malware scans. Once your anti-virus and anti-spyware
scans all come up clean, you should turn the System restore back ON. 
The procedures for turning the System Restore OFF and ON are as follows:


How to Turn OFF the System Restore in Windows XP

1.) Click.. START, then right-click.. My Computer and 
select.. Properties

   The System Properties dialog will appear.

2.) Click the tab for.. System Restore,
then UNCHECK the box labeled.. "Turn Off System Restore on all drives"


3.) Click.. Apply and wait for the dialog to report the 
Status of the drive(s) as "Turned Off".

4.) Click.. OK
and restart the Windows as you normally do from START.
 

How to Turn ON the System Restore in Windows XP

1.) Click.. START, then right-click.. My Computer and 
select.. Properties

   The System Properties dialog will appear.

2.) Click the tab for.. System Restore,
then CHECKMARK the box labeled.. "Turn Off System Restore on all drives"


3.) Click.. Apply and wait for the dialog to report the 
Status of the drive(s) as "Monitoring".

4.) Click.. OK
and continue to use Windows as you normally do.
